A rich medley of ambiance, movement, and musique comes to us courtesy of illustrious choreographers Hans van Manen and Jiří Kylián, throughout this retrospective dedicated to contemporary Dutch ballet. Two of the most prestigious ballet companies in the country dazzle us in the course of six remarkable programs, filmed from 1987 through 2007. First up, rediscover the stunning eloquence of Sabine Kupferberg, Jiří Kylián's muse and longtime partner, in the solo showpiece Silent Cries, a mysterious work in which a canvas onstage is progressively torn apart by the dancer's gaze and movements, set to Debussy's gloriously atmospheric Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune.
