Every year, as the days grow longer, Austria gets ready for one of the classical calendar’s highlights: the Vienna Philharmonic’s Summer Night Concert. This event, inaugurated in 2004, brings the prestigious ensemble together with some of the world’s most illustrious soloists—in front of an audience that regularly numbers more than 100,000—in the gardens of Vienna’s world-famous Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the 2022 edition, the Vienna Philharmonic invites renowned Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons and French cello virtuoso Gautier Capuçon to join in the festivities, performing a pan-European program from across the ages. In addition to indispensable Romantic works (Beethoven and Saint-Saëns) and Italian opera flair (Rossini), you'll hear music by Eastern European greats—including a tango by Nelsons's compatriot Arturs Maskats, a stirring Romanian Rhapsody by George Enescu, and unforgettable favorites by Czech masters Smetana and Dvořák. Another major highlight comes to us from Ukraine: a waltz by the emblematic Mykola Lysenko, icon of Ukrainian culture and composer of multiple operas.
