Renowned for his innovative and powerful compositional style, experience another side of Thomas Adès—the pianist!—in this recital that sees him at the keyboard. At the Fondation Louis Vuitton in 2018, he invites us on a journey into the piano works of Leoš Janáček.
In these pieces composed relatively early in his career, we find glimpses of the trademark style that will later come to full bloom in well-known works like Jenůfa or The Cunning Little Vixen. Adès's thoughtful and skilled performance brings out the full spectrum of color present in these deeply Romantic works which also reveal flashes of Impressionist influences. Pieces like V plači (In tears), In the Mists, and the two books of On an Overgrown Path are replete with potential references to the generations that left their mark on a young Janáček (Schubert, Schumann, Ravel, Debussy...) all the while forging the unique style that marks the great Czech composer's oeuvre.
