Danish composer Carl Nielsen establishes his unique compositional style in the flamboyant and unpredictable score of his Symphony No.1. In a performance by the outstanding Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Nielsen’s original and progressive understanding of modulation shines as the piece begins in a minor and closes in the joyous key of C major - a rather new idea in the world of the symphony. Composed in 1892 at the age of 27, the work reveals a surprising maturity and achieved rapid success following its première in Copenhagen. One recognized critic described the symphony as “unstable and brutal in its modulations yet marvelously innocent, like a child playing with dynamite”.
