The Danish National Symphony Orchestra play Nielsen's Symphony No. 2 "The Four Temperaments" An award-winning Nielsen cycle with Fabio Luisi

About

Under the baton of principal conductor Fabio Luisi, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra performs one of Carl Nielsen’s most adored and well known works, The Four Temperaments. The Danish icon (of a similar standing to Sibelius in Finland) was inspired to write his Symphony No. 2 by various engravings that he himself discovered, depicting each of the Four Temperaments: Sanguin, Melancholic, Choleric and Phlegmatic. They are brought to life in the four movements, each dedicated to one of the Temperaments, building towards the sublime third movement, Andante malincolico. Composed between 1901 and 1902, the work illustrates a totally unique musical style, far from those of Nielsen’s contemporaries.
