This sumptuous concert given by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, dedicated to the music of composer Carl Nielsen, begins with the iconic prelude to Nielsen’s opera Saul and David, followed by his Flute Concerto, stunningly played by the brilliant Ulla Miilmann. The Symphony espansiva (Nielsen’s third symphony) brings the evening to a majestic close through the work’s beaming energy. Often described as a ‘Nordic Pastoral’, the piece evoques the Danish landscape and, in its second movement, introduces stunning melodies for soprano and baritone solos. The symphony’s final movement - “a hymn and joyous address to daily life” - draws the symphony to its cadence.
