About

Join sensational soprano Sonya Yoncheva and her husband, maestro Domingo Hindoyan, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in a dazzling Romantic program!

Chausson’s song cycle Poème de l’amour et de la mer is characterized by rich harmonies and lush orchestration, a reflection on love, the power of nature, and life’s transience. Structured in two parts bridged by an orchestral interlude, it draws inspiration from the achingly beautiful poems La Fleur des eaux and La Mort de l’amour by the composer’s friend, Maurice Bouchor. Equally poignant in its melodies and themes is Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, from which the featured Prelude and Liebestod mark the beginning and end of the opera. Richly orchestrated and psychologically profound, the opera was described by Friedrich Nietzsche as “the real opus metaphysicum of all art…overpowering in its simple grandeur,” while eliciting “wonder and terror” in the great Giuseppe Verdi. Concluding the program is Dvořák’s sunny Symphony No. 8, the calm after the storm—a joyous, lively, and lyrical composition honoring Bohemian folk music.
