The concert begins with Kikimora, a "fairytale for orchestra" by Anatoly Lyadov, a breathtaking work that calls to mind Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The program continues with Rachmaninov’s formidable Piano Concerto No. 2, perhaps the composer’s most popular work, and one prized by audiences and piano virtuosos like Kirill Gerstein, who performs it with great emotion and spellbinding technical ease. To conclude, the Berliner Philharmoniker performs Mussorgksy’s Pictures at an Exhibition in Ravel’s sweeping and celebrated orchestration.
