The mega-talented Mao Fujita, Verbier Festival Academy alumnus and winner of many prestigious accolades—including a widely lauded run to the Silver Medal at the 2019 International Tchaikovsky Competition—makes his solo debut on the stage of the Verbier Festival! Over the course of five exceptional concerts, the young pianist tackles a formidable challenge: the complete Mozart Piano Sonatas.
This third recital opens with the Sonata No. 11 in A, a work with a nontraditional structure: none of its movements are written in sonata form! After a theme and variations, a menuet, and a trio, the universally known Rondo alla turca (Turkish March) concludes the sonata on an exultant note. The virtuoso continues with the second Piano Sonata in F, composed when Mozart was just 19 and including a ravishingly beautiful Adagio, one of the loveliest slow movements in his immense oeuvre. Fujita brings the evening to a close with Sonata No. 15, also in F, originally written in two movements before the addition of a concluding Rondo composed several months earlier. A meticulous counterpoint creates delicious dramatic tension, which only a performer of Fujita's great finesse and fully controlled technique can build.
