The monumental piano concerto is framed by two works inspired by Felix Mendelssohn’s first trip to the British Isles: The Hebrides and the "Scottish" Symphony. The choir director turned early music specialist Sir John Eliot Gardiner is recognized today as an authority in repertoires ranging from Monteverdi’s sacred music to Bach’s cantatas to Mozart’s operas right through to Beethoven’s, Schubert’s, and Brahms’s choral and symphonic works, and with this concert he opens another brilliant chapter in his career.
