Under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas—one of today's great Mahler specialists—the Verbier Festival Orchestra performs the Austrian composer's Symphony No.3.
One of the longest symphonies ever written, Mahler's Third Symphony is an ode to nature: as Mahler himself put it to conductor Bruno Walter on his visit to Steinbach-am-Attersee in 1896, "There’s no need to look at the landscape, all of it is in my symphony." The regional choirs Oberwalliser Vokalensemble and Haut-Valais Singing School's Chœur Cantiamo join the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the genius contralto Nathalie Stutzmann—one of the most remarkable personalities of her generation—for a performance of this hymn to life.
