Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos is without a doubt one of the most popular of the genre: unlike in his Concerto for Three Pianos, he gives the two soloists equal musical importance and the orchestra a very active role to play. As part of the 2008 “Mozart Week” in Salzburg, two great Mozart specialists, Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Tamara Stefanovich, performed the Double Concerto with incredible subtlety and synergy, accompanied by the Salzburg Camerata under the baton of Jonathan Nott.
First prizewinner of the Olivier Messiaen International Competition at the age of 16, Pierre-Laurent Aimard has cut a considerable place for himself in the classical music world. In 1977, he became a founding member of the now-celebrated Ensemble intercontemporain. In addition to his work in contemporary music, he has recorded Beethoven’s five Piano Concertos with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the European Chamber Orchestra. Pianist Tamara Stefanovich’s schedule is no less packed, with recitals, music festivals, and concerts in the company of some of the greatest names of the symphonic and chamber music worlds.
