Established in 2019, the Tsinandali Festival is proud to spread the love of classical music throughout the whole Caucasus region. This year's edition heavily features the Pan-Caucasian Youth Orchestra, comprising 80 promising young artists from Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and Armenia. For this very special evening they offer up two of the most important works of the previous century: Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, performed by the extraordinary Frang, and Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5.
Written for violin legend David Oistrakh, Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto—composed in 1947-48 but not premiered until 1955 for political reasons—is a powerful, formidable work in four movements. The unique style of the iconoclastic composer is on full display as well as the depth of his artistry, from the charged restraint of the initial Nocturne to the frenzied Scherzo that follows, grandeur and intensity in the famous Passacaglia and fully unbridled pyrotechnics in the concluding Burlesque. Bringing the evening to a close is one of Prokofiev's most celebrated orchestral works, the Fifth Symphony in B-flat Major: energetic, vigorous, and almost martial in spirit, having been written in just one wartime month in 1944.
