The second volume of this sterling set spotlights four chamber masterpieces: the tumultuous Sonata No. 3, probably the best known of the Op. 12 sonatas; the audacious Sonata No. 4, Op. 23, energetic and full of contrasts; and the famous Sonatas Nos. 6 and 8 from Op. 30. Beethoven composed this series of works before the terrible summer of 1802, which saw the composer plagued by dark thoughts as he could no longer deny the implications of his worsening hearing. Nevertheless, Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 6 (A major) and No. 8 (G major) are suffused with lightness and serenity, as if written in the calm before the storm.
