After a selection of Mendelssohn's supremely lyrical Songs without Words, Lugansky performs Chopin's Nocturne in D-flat, Op. 27, No. 2 — perhaps the dreamiest and most moonlit of them all — and swooning, stormy Ballade No. 4, then moves on to a second half devoted to Wagner, all selections from his 2024 album named one of the best of the year by Gramophone: formidable transcriptions of scenes from Götterdämmerung (by Lugansky himself) and of the immortal Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde (by Liszt).
