Classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma, virtuoso mandolinist-folk musician Chris Thile, bluegrass string player Stuart Duncan, bassist-composer Edgar Meyer, and singer-songwriter Aoife O'Donavan present a one-of-a-kind live concert of their own category-defying musical creations, all selections from their Grammy-winning album The Goat Rodeo Sessions.
A goat rodeo is slang for "a scenario that requires about one hundred things to go right at once if you intend to walk away from it.” In The Goat Rodeo Sessions, five accomplished musicians of starkly different artistic backgrounds, but bound together by love of their art, joined forces. The result was a mesmerizing fusion of bluegrass, classical music, country, jazz, and other folk music styles that refuses categorization. The project began as a 2011 collaborative album, blossomed into a series of live concerts, and culminated in winning the 2013 Grammy Awards for Best Folk Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). In this film, the group's live concert performance of selections from their album is interwoven with commentary from the musicians themselves, with the inimitable cellist Yo-Yo Ma as host.
