A regular guest at the Verbier Festival, in this evening’s concert from July 2009, the great Russian conductor Yuri Temirkanov conducts the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10.
It was Evgeny Mravinsky—maestro Temirkanov’s predecessor in the post of musical director of the Leningrad Philharmonic—who conducted the work’s premiere. According to the composer, the symphony is marked by the death of Stalin, who had passed away just a few months before.
