Recently remastered by the Karajan Institute, the precious collection of archival footage of this documentary offers a tantalizing glimpse into the rehearsal process for the opera, for Bach’s B Minor Mass, and for a concert of works by Wagner. Particular gems include the maestro working closely with a young Kathleen Battle, Cecilia Bartoli, Sumi Jo, and Jessye Norman and offering general advice about life and music-making. Get a better understanding of Karajan’s singular connection with his native country, the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Salzburg Festival, the musicians he challenged, and the audiences who adored him.
