So what?! A Portrait of Friedrich Gulda Bach, Debussy, Mozart, Schubert and Gulda himself

About

So what?, a portrait of Friedrich Gulda, legendary pianist and "enfant terrible" of classical music.

This documentary explores Friedrich Gulda as both man and artist. Beyond his undeniable talent as a classical pianist, he was recognized for his work in jazz and avant-garde repertoire. Here Benedict Mirow pays homage to the last years of the artist’s life, using excerpted footage from archival films and past concerts, with Friedrich Gulda himself and Ulrich Mühe as narrators. Among the documentary's highlights is a passionate interview of the artist by the German music critic Joachim Kaiser, in which Gulda discusses musicians like Chopin, Cortot and Schubert.

Among the selected concert excerpts to be found in the film are performances of three of Bach's Preludes and Fugues, Schubert's Reflets dans l’eau, Debussy's La Soirée dans Grenade, excerpts from Gulda's own compositions, and, last but not least, arrangements of compositions by one of his favourite composers, Mozart.
