One of the most celebrated and widely beloved of all comic operas, Richard Strauss's bawdy, uproarious Der Rosenkavalier feels fresher than ever in this impeccable 2014 staging by provocative director Richard Jones at the Glyndebourne Festival. Jones sets the action in vibrantly colorful 1950s decor, with eye-catching sets by Paul Steinberg and stylish costumes by Nicky Gillibrand that give a "magnificent and witty" impression (The Guardian).
The vocal cast is impeccable, led by the excellent Kate Royal as the Marschallin and the "ardent and appealing" Tara Erraught in the pants role of her younger lover Octavian, her voice "rich with dark glints and bright promise." As Baron Ochs and Sophie von Faninal, who round out our amorous quadrangle, Lars Woldt and Teodora Gheorghiu are note-perfect, bringing poise and presence to the stage. Strauss's raucous score bounces and beguiles in the hands of the London Philharmonic Orchestra under 31-year-old Robin Ticciati, then just beginning his lauded run as music director of the prestigious festival.
