In this production by Jean-Louis Grinda, soprano star Aida Garifullina brings to life the character of Violetta Valéry, a courtesan who gives up her life in Paris to live with the bourgeois Alfredo Germont (a role in which Javier Camarena makes his long-awaited debut!). But Alfredo's father, played by Massimo Cavalletti, does not take kindly to his son's new fiancée and manages to convince Violetta to leave Alfredo for his own good. She flees without revealing why, which leads Alfredo to believe she has found a new beau—and by the time he learns the truth, it is too late: Violetta, stricken with tuberculosis, dies in his arms…
Under the baton of Massimo Zanetti, the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra performs Verdi's timeless score for this tragedy based on Dumas's La Dame aux Camélias. One of the monuments of 19th-century opera, a dream cast, and sumptuous sets make this one of the marquee events of Cecilia Bartoli's inaugural season as director of the Monte Carlo Opera!
