Italy is the birthplace of opera: Claudio Monteverdi composed L'Orfeo in 1607, the earliest opera still performed today, and many of his compatriots set about adding their own innovative contributions to the nascent genre. When we think of opera, then, it is often the Italian language that comes to mind first—but of course, opera masterpieces have since been composed in dozens of languages, from German and French to Spanish and English, Russian and Czech to Hungarian, Swedish, Chinese… To give you a sample of this beautiful linguistic diversity, we've prepared this playlist for you to discover a selection of operas in many different languages!
