The music of Gabriel Fauré is known for its lush harmonies, piercing melodies, and delicate equilibrium of fragility and force. In this concert from the 2024 Aspen Music Festival and School, three of today's most sought-after soloists, all of whom are Aspen alumni — violinist Joshua Bell, cellist Steven Isserlis, and pianist Jeremy Denk — bring out and balance all of Fauré's best qualities in three beloved chamber works! They perform Fauré's lone Piano Trio in D minor, bittersweet and elegant; the first of his two Piano Quintets, also in a propulsive D minor, with violinist David Halen and violist Zhenwei Shi; and finally, again with Shi, the Piano Quartet No. 2 in G minor, one of the first great works of Fauré's artistic maturity, with a third-movement Adagio that Aaron Copland called "a long sigh of infinite tenderness, a long moment of quiet melancholy and nostalgic charm."
Watch Jeremy Denk and Joshua Bell talk about their memories of Aspen in our special feature!
