Шедевр Генделя «Семела», впервые исполненный в Лондоне в 1744 году, – не собственно опера, а скорее оратория. Тем не менее, она идеально подходит для сцены благодаря блестящему либретто Уильяма Конгрива, заимствовавшего сюжет из «Метаморфоз» Овидия.
