Opening the program is the first-ever performance of Time, co-commission by the OSM, the San Diego Symphony, the NDR Radiophilharmonie, the Tonkünstler-Orchester and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the newest work by the innovative Larcher, whose "extraordinary, arresting, communicative music is one of this century's wonders" (The Times). Following the entr'acte, the OSM takes on one of the symphonic genre's most celebrated masterpieces: Mahler's 2nd. Spiritual and metaphysical in character, full of dramatic contrasts, and several years in the making, the work references age-old questions of life and death, grasping at the ineffable. Great dynamic forces and delicate softness alternate throughout, but the formidable final movement, which typically lasts over half an hour, concludes the symphony in an unforgettable apotheosis—a climactic release of tension "so tremendous," in the words of the composer, "that I don't know myself, now that it is over, how I ever came to write it."
