En quelques mots...

Sémélé, le chef-d’œuvre de Haendel créé en 1744 à Londres, n’est pas un opéra à proprement parler, mais plutôt un oratorio qui se prête particulièrement bien à la scène, grâce à l’excellent livret dramatique de William Congreve d’après les Métamorphoses d’Ovide. L’opus est composé de nombreux airs et chœurs d’une richesse mélodique et expressive étonnante, dont les airs célèbres « Oh sleep, why dost thou leave me? », « Where’er you walk », ou encore le ravissant « Endless pleasure, endless love » !
